Reducing Food Waste and Nourishing Communities Using Surplus Food
WHAT WE DO
OUR FOCUS AND AIMS ARE:
REDUCE FOOD WASTE
We work together with local businesses on different projects and campaigns so as to create awareness and offer food at special prices in order to encourage reduction of food waste as well as to benefit the community by helping them to save money and increase sustainability.
REDUCE FOOD POVERTY
We make use of resources that already exist: our volunteers collect surplus at local supermarkets, grocery stores and restaurants and turn them into a nutritious meal to those in need.
We plan to do this through our Hubs. We turn community centers into kitchen spaces and reach out to the most vulnerable by serving them warm food in a warm and welcoming environment.
BUILD STRONGER COMMUNITIES
WHY WE DO IT
We, Malaysians, waste 15,000 tonnes of food daily including 3,000 tonnes that is still fit for consumption and should not be discarded.
United Nations estimates that 1 in 9 people in the world do not have access to sufficient food to lead a healthy life. More people are reported to die from hunger every day than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. But at the same time, nearly one-third of the food that is produced in the world is lost or wasted due to one reason or the other.
Food waste that ends up in landfills produces a large amount of methane – a more powerful greenhouse gas than even CO2. For the uninitiated, excess amounts of greenhouse gases such as methane, CO2 and chloroflurocarbons absorb infrared radiation and heat up the earth’s atmosphere, causing global warming and climate change.
WHO WE ARE
A Distinct Identity
SESO IS A NON - PROFIT ORGANISATION THAT COMBATS FOOD WASTE AND FOOD POVERTY
SESO 's main goal is to fight against food waste and food poverty. While spreading awareness and spearheading projects to tackle food waste and food poverty is an important part of what we do, we also help to build communities, in particular amongst people who are suffering from social isolation. We do this through serving communal meals in a warm dignified and welcoming environment.
By getting people of different culture, race, religion, and background to share a meal together, we hope to give our guests and volunteers an opportunity to make friends and forge connections.
WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
We are currently developing, testing and refining our organisation model and we welcome more Supermarkets, Grocery Stores, Restaurants, Shops, Charities and Community Groups to join us so that we can build a network of community kitchens and more people in need can be fed throughout Malaysia.
